Pilgrimage to pregnancy: Chapter 1

The first step - the first cycle - I kept thinking it would be easy to get pregnant; I was doing all the ‘right’ things and so of course my baby would come to me with ease. Cycle after cycle passed without pregnancy, but still I prayed and believed if I just visualized it enough, if I was positive enough, my baby would come.

A year passed and I knew deep down that something was just not right. We journeyed to a fertility doctor who helped us find my tubes were completely engulfed in scar tissue from previous digestive surgeries and so my eggs couldn’t make it through to my uterus - no matter how many herbs, acupuncture sessions, meditations - I was going to need yet another surgery. And I was going to need IVF. This was so much different than the natural path I had hoped for, but still, I approached the experience with trust, faith and with an eye to an East / West balance.

I look back to these photos from our pilgrimage to this place of pregnancy - from our first embryo transfer - to our second round of egg retrievals - to the day we received our sweet baby, our third embryo transfer - to the moment we knew she was sticking with us! I see hope and joy fade into apprehension and caution. And I remember all of the pictures in between that I never snapped, the tears and disappointment, fear of the unknown future, the deep longing to bring our baby to my womb and to the world. And I celebrate with myself in the last photo! I celebrate each version of myself who showed up each day to make this moment possible. I remember my strength and courage and in this moment I am happy and content with my sweet girl dancing around my womb. At 18 weeks today I am grateful, I am hopeful, I am blessed 🙏🏼
